Everyone rotated to a new reading teacher today. We’ll be with this new reading teacher for the rest of third quarter.
In Mrs. Sparhawk’s reading classes, we were given a quick lesson on how to look up unfamiliar words in a dictionary, using guide words. We were also given a handout calledWord Cards. If you were absent for the lesson, go to the make-up work center and look for Box 2 for reading. There you’ll find extra copies of the Word Cards handout, or you can just print one from home, as this link offers you a copy. The handout was created using Microsoft Office Word 2010, so if you have an older version of Microsoft Office Word, your at-home computer may not be able to read and print this document. Still, there are plenty of extra handouts in the classroom.
Today’s vocabulary word was captain. You’ll need to fill out the syllable breaks, definition, part of speech (i.e. noun, verb, adjective, etc.) and sentence portion of your word card for this, but you are welcome to copy the drawing of a captain from one of your classmates’ word card worksheets. If you need help making your word card for the first time, please ask Mrs. Sparhawk for assistance.
We were also given a manila file folder to keep our reading logs (daily journals) in. Watch for future assignments where we’ll be writing in these journals. If you were absent today, you may need to ask Mrs. Sparhawk for a manila folder and journal sheet. The reading logs (journals) are found in reading box 1 and there’s another half-sheet of paper (with circles on it) called a sticker sheet. These sticker sheets are in box 3. Please keep these two documents–the reading log and sticker sheet– in your manila folder, but keep your word cards worksheet with you in a pocket folder that you’ll bring to class every day.
