We were given a new vocabulary list last Monday.  As always, the definitions are found under “Vocabulary Lists” in the top menu. The spelling test over this list will be given on Friday, October 4. Don’t wait until the last minute to start studying!

Today was a VERY important day because everyone went to the big computer lab, where we learned how to type a document using Google Docs. Here are the steps to help you get started:

  1. Log into Google with your school e-mail address.
  2. Look across the black bar in Google for the word “Drive” and click that.
  3. Click a red box on the left that says “Create”.
  4. Choose “document” (it has a blue icon).
  5. Change the font to Times New Roman, font size 12.
  6. Hover over various icons until you find one called “Line Spacing” and choose “Double” for double-spacing.
  7. Near the spacing button is one called “Center Align”; choose this and your cursor will move to the middle.
  8. Type your essay’s title (What Patriotism Means to Me), making sure you capitalize all words but “to” and carefully spelling Patriotism.
  9. Hit the “Enter” button on your keyboard.
  10. Now choose the icon that’s called “Left Align”, and your cursor should move to the left.
  11. Use the Tab button on the keyboard to help you indent paragraphs correctly.
  12. Continue typing until you finish your essay.

You may not work on this essay at home, as this will disqualify your “Patriot’s Pen” essay from winning the contest. You may use dictionary.com and thesaurus.com as you work though.  If you need an extra day to type your essay, please set an official appointment to come in after school to type. (Your teacher has lunch duty this week, so she won’t be available at lunch time.)

You’ll also find it helpful to use the following items under “Tools” in the Menu at the top of the page:

  • Spelling
  • Word Count

If you finish early, read through your draft carefully to make sure there are no typing errors. Then please print your essay, place it in your file folder, and take a seat at the tables. Take your file folder with you. Read through the VFW’s rules and guidelines on the form that must be submitted with your essay. Make sure you have fulfilled the contest’s rules and guidelines. You may go back and continue typing if you find an error that may disqualify you from winning the contest.

It’s possible that your teacher took grades on the D.O.L. today. Please ask her if she did. If so, you need to get a D.O.L. make-up sheet from your teacher.

Tomorrow is our spelling/vocabulary test! Don’t forget to study tonight!

We also turned in our “Patriot’s Pen”essays for the VFW. You must turn yours in with the following items stapled to them:

  • On top => the VFW’s form with your name and address filled out (in the blue highlighted box)
  • On the bottom => your typed essay

Staple those two together.

You’ll also find a half-sheet of paper in the Thursday box. Fill this out with your name and your essay’s title. Do not staple this, but submit it with your first draft and flowchart. Make sure your name is also on your first draft.

So altogether, you’ll submit the following:

  • the VFW contest form
  • your typed final draft
  • a six traits form (half-sheet of paper)
  • your edited first draft
  • your flowchart

Give these items to your teacher right away! This is your first quarter final exam score, so it’s a very important grade for this class! Don’t wait to turn it in! Remember to put make-up work directly into the teacher’s hand.
